Zadoc Calendar in Jubilees is a
"spurious/wrong calendar to use.
The Jubilees 6 Zadoc Calendar is “NOT” to be used as a “correction” of the existing true Biblically CORRECT, and true established, OT and NT Crescent Moon sighting practices:
Instead it is a polemic (spurious bitter biased attack) against the mainstream Biblical Texts. It is against Biblical Texts because the lunisolar calendar was in use from Moses through the Second Temple period.
The attacking author of Jubilees (mid-2nd century BC) belonged to a sectarian group that wanted a purely solar, fixed 364-day calendar and therefore THAT IS “WHY” he condemned the observed-new-moon system that the Torah first 5 Books itself assumes and regulates.
We, TO COG stand by the canonical Hebrew Bible as authoritative in such instances as this one:
Jubilee’s condemnation of observing the new moon is spurious and
it is a polemic against the mainstream Biblical lunisolar calendar that was in use from Moses through to the Second Temple period.
Jubilees “contradicts” written Scripture.
Furthermore: The Bible never commands or even hints at a 364-day year that the author was trying to promote. The canonized Bible consistently treats the new moon (first visible crescent) as the legitimate beginning of the month.
Here are the key biblical texts that point to the new moon (specifically the first visible crescent) marking the beginning of the month:
1. Psalm 104:19 (most direct poetic statement)
“He made the moon to mark the seasons [Hebrew: מוֹעֲדִים mo‘adim]; the sun knows it’s time for setting.” (ESV)
2. Numbers 28:11–14 – New Moon sacrifices
“At the beginnings of your months [בְּרָאשֵׁי חֳדְשֵׁיכֶם, literally “at the heads of your months”], you shall offer a burnt offering…”
This sacrifice was offered every month on the “new moon” day (called רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ / Rosh Chodesh).
3. Numbers 10:10
“On the day of your gladness… and at the beginning of your months [וּבְרָאשֵׁי חֳדְשֵׁיכֶם] you shall blow the trumpets…”
4. 1 Samuel 20:5, 18, 24–27 – David and Jonathan’s story
David says to Jonathan: “Tomorrow is the new moon [חֹדֶשׁ], and I should not fail to sit at table with the king…” (v. 5) Jonathan later says: “Tomorrow is the new moon [הַחֹדֶשׁ]…” (v. 18) Saul notices David’s absence “when the new moon came” (v. 24–27).
→ This shows that in Saul’s time (c. 11th–10th century BC), the “new moon” was a recognized monthly observance that everyone knew about in advance only because the first visible crescent was being sighted.
5. Isaiah 66:23 (future eschatological worship)
“From new moon to new moon [מֵחֹדֶשׁ בְּחָדְשׁוֹ], and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, declares the LORD.”
6. Ezekiel 46:1, 3, 6 (temple vision)
“The gate of the inner court… shall be shut… but on the Sabbath and on the day of the new moon it shall be opened… On the day of the new moon [בְּיוֹם הַחֹדֶשׁ]…”
7. Amos 8:5 (negative example)
The merchants complain: “When will the new moon be over, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may offer wheat for sale…?”
→ Again, everyone in society knew exactly when the new moon day was, which only makes sense if it was determined by actual observation of the crescent.
How the ancient Israelites actually determined the new moon
Although the Bible never spells out the mechanics, ancient Near Eastern evidence and later Jewish sources (Mishnah Rosh Hashanah 1–2) confirm that the Sanhedrin or local authorities declared the start of the month only after reliable witnesses testified they had seen the thin crescent moon after sunset. Fires were lit on hilltops or messengers sent to announce it.
So while the Bible does not contain a verse that says verbatim “the month begins when the crescent moon is first sighted,” the repeated phrase “beginning of the month / new moon” (רֹאשׁ חֹדֶשׁ) combined with the cultural and archaeological context makes it clear that the first visible crescent was the Biblical signal for the new month.
The strongest single verse is Psalm 104:19:
“He appointed the moon for the appointed times [מוֹעֲדִים / mo‘adim].”
